How to Plan a Helicopter Elopement

A bride and groom running and cheering about getting married.

You deserve an adventure on the day you get married – and your wedding day should be about who you are, not about who someone else thinks you should be. A helicopter elopement is an amazing way to celebrate, and it’s a truly one-of-a-kind experience! Just imagine soaring over the lush landscapes of Maui, seeing the mountains, waterfalls, and beaches from above….

This guide is all about how to plan a helicopter elopement – tips, things to consider, and everything you need to know!

What is a Helicopter Elopement?

Before we talk about planning one, you need to know what a helicopter elopement is! On your elopement day, you’ll have a tour with an experienced guide who will fly you in a helicopter and take you to the views.

Some helicopter tours may not include a landing in between, but depending on the tour, you may be able to land in a remote location, and exchange vows there, or have a first dance, or pop some champagne, or whatever else you’ve got planned!

Should You Plan a Helicopter Elopement?

If you’re on the fence about a helicopter elopement for your day, I absolutely think you should do it! Here are a few reasons why this is an incredible adventure to have on your elopement day.

Amazing Views

As long as you’re okay with heights, soaring over the incredible landscape of Maui is an experience you don’t want to miss. With a helicopter elopement, you can see all of the amazing views without having to hike! There are vibrant green mountains, secret waterfalls, sparkling blue beaches, and more – and it all looks even more incredible from above, with places you wouldn’t get to see otherwise.

A One-of-a-Kind Elopement Experience

A helicopter elopement ensures that the day you get married is truly one of a kind. Planning a unique adventure on the day you get married is the best way to ensure that your day truly reflects who you are and how you want to get married – and a helicopter elopement is an experience you’ll never forget!

Remote Locations

A helicopter can take you to places that are completely private – landing in spots that you’ll have entirely to yourselves. You can exchange vows without anyone around, and see the most incredible places!

The Best Time for a Helicopter Elopement

Weather is often a concern when it comes to planning a helicopter elopement, since it can be unsafe to fly in snow or heavy rain.

Luckily, this isn’t usually something you have to worry about when you plan your helicopter elopement in Maui, since the weather is pretty idyllic year-round! Rain showers do happen (often), but usually won’t affect your helicopter tour. Winter is the rainiest season, so if you want to stay dry, plan your elopement for another time – but, the rain does create some really gorgeous rainbows!

Another thing to think about is visibility – you want to be able to see the landscape below you! Because clouds, fog, and rain showers tend to roll in later in the day, the best time for a helicopter tour is usually in the morning. Mornings are clear, so you’ll be able to see everything perfectly!

Tips for a Helicopter Elopement

As you plan your helicopter elopement, here are some tips to keep in mind!

Wear Layers

If you’ll be making a pitstop during your flight to exchange vows or have a picnic or just enjoy the views, it’s important to remember that the weather there might be a little different than it was when you took off.

When you go up in the mountains or anywhere that’s higher in elevation, it’s often colder and windier. A general rule of thumb is that temperatures drops about 3-4 degrees Fahrenheit for every 1,000 feet that you go up. In Maui, it won’t be too cold (unless you go several thousand feet above sea level – so make sure you know the plan ahead of time), so you likely won’t need to get decked out in winter gear or anything! But, adding some layers will help you stay comfortable.

Suits make layering easy, and most people will be fine with a suit jacket. If you’re wearing a dress, wearing a jacket, shawl, or even a cape will keep you warm, and adding some thermal leggings under the skirt can help too!

Keep Your Guest List Short

A helicopter elopement isn’t ideal for couples eloping with family – though you can definitely have some guests with you before or after, and then take off on your helicopter tour by yourselves! There won’t be a ton of room on the helicopter, so this adventure is best for couples who want a private experience.
